ORCA donations to community-based education centers
Social Services
ORCA considers the practice of social responsibility an important component to ethical research practices in demand driven development that ORCA envisions to establish in Afghanistan. Our social responsibility goal is implement sustainable small demand driven development projects based on the needs identified by our research in those communities. These small development projects are implemented out of the 10% of our profits and community contributions.
ORCA has donated backpacks, books, stationery, and other basic learning materials to 45 community-based education centers, already established by the local people in many areas of the country. During the data collection period, our field team found that the most marginalized students, particularly girls had to quit their lessons due to lack of books and stationery because their parents could not afford their learning expenses. Therefore, ORCA had the pleasure to fill this gap and support young students, particularly marginalized girls catch up with their learning.
So far, ORCA has implemented 87 small projects that have benefited thousands of men, women and children in Afghanistan. A small example is a tube-well project recently implemented in the southern Province of Nangarhar where our research had discovered that the main obstacle for parents not allowing their daughters to go to school was because they had to walk for 6-10 Km in order to bring water, settle the mud overnight for household use for the following day. After the tube-well project completed successfully, we have seen girls lining up to get clean drinking water more easily and quickly. As a follow up, we interviewed the headmistress of the school and she said that in 3 months only, 243 girls applied for admission which is a record in the history of the school.
Educational Services
We at ORCA feel that it is necessary to give back to the communities we do research in as an ethical practice of social responsibility. Our research has identified certain areas in dire need of a clinic, school, road or drinking water. In such cases, we invest along with the community to support their needs in a sustainable project.
We have a strong commitment to support and invest in children’s education as a sustainable means towards social and economic development. Therefore, we also look for ways to invest in children who are so disadvantaged that they cannot afford an education and sustainable future.
A few stories of our successful projects

Due to the very heavy fight and massacre during the Taliban Regime in our Province (Mazar-e-Sharif), I saw my one and the only son, Homayoon killed while others were enjoying their feast during Eid ul Adha and slaughtering animals to make their picnic and parties colorful. Before this deadly incident, our life was running smoothly as I was also weaving hats and selling them to help my family. One day, I can never forget it because it was the first day of Eid-ul-Adha (Feast Day), the bride (my daughter-in-law) was cooking sheep head in the yard and we were hearing firing sounds around our home. As the bride yelled, my beloved son after praying and wearing new clothes just went out to see what was going on. An armed person entered the home and shot my son three times, two bullets went into the air and one hit my son in his kidneys. As he fell down, his bride and his son (Sahel) rushed to grace him, but Homayoon Jan’s body was already bleeding and I couldn’t bear it and lost consciousness. He was then taken to the hospital but since it was Eid day, most of the doctors were not available in the hospital. My son died the following day despite we found some blood for him. When I came back to conscious, I saw a box in our yard a lot of people telling me to wake up and see Homayoon’s face, I still remember him as he was like a sleeping white face with closed beautiful eyes. From that day, grief, pain and poverty knocked our door and after six months, while the bride was delivering her baby (Ajmal), she lost her life, too. They left me with three kids (two sons, Sahel and Ajaml with a daughter, Sapna), imagine what sort of difficulties I had to bear for growing them. Lack of food, lack of shelter, lack of clothes, lack of medical care and so on. There was no one to help us even one day. Many times in life, I wanted to commit suicide as in addition to this, my husband has also been too sick and I had to wash neighbors’ clothes and clean their homes to make some money for husband’s treatment and children’s food. My grandson has been washing cars and selling water and shopping bags and grand-daughter has been taking water up the hill for the neighbors to earn bread every day.
Now with ORCA’s assistance, happiness is back to our family. My husband has been treated; my grandson and granddaughter go to school every day. The life that I hated some time before, I love to live it now to see my grandchildren being the great pillars of our family, the society and the country. Sahel is now working as a data entry operator at ORCA and I always advise them never to forget ORCA’s assistance that made visible and incredible change in our life forever.

ORCA has recently implemented a mosque construction project in Nahia 17th of Kabul City where our research team found out that the main hindrance for people not allowing their children to go to mosque and get access to basic schooling was long distance of the very remote mosque. Since this was a mountainous area, children had problems going to the remote mosque particularly during winter season. After the construction completed successfully, we noticed great changes in the life of the local people in this area.
A local elder and Wakil (representative of the people) said that after ORCA implemented this important project, it helped us with the following:
- We can perform our prayers in congregation.
- Our children can go to the mosque and follow their basic education.
- Mullah Imam has established a Madrasa inside the mosque as well, now we are satisfied with ORCA’s attention to our children’s proper education.
- Earlier, we did not have a central venue in order to socialize and solve problems but now we can discuss and solve all of our problems, disputes and conflicts inside this mosque.
- Earlier, local people could not hold death ceremonies of their relatives and families due to lack of a mosque, but now they can hold such ceremonies inside this mosque and in the close proximity of their homes
