Due to the very heavy fight and massacre during the Taliban Regime in our Province (Mazar-e-Sharif), I saw my one and the only son, Homayoon killed while others were enjoying their feast during Eid ul Adha and slaughtering animals to make their picnic and parties colorful. Before this deadly incident, our life was running smoothly as I was also weaving hats and selling them to help my family. One day, I can never forget it because it was the first day of Eid-ul-Adha (Feast Day), the bride (my daughter-in-law) was cooking sheep head in the yard and we were hearing firing sounds around our home. As the bride yelled, my beloved son after praying and wearing new clothes just went out to see what was going on. An armed person entered the home and shot my son three times, two bullets went into the air and one hit my son in his kidneys. As he fell down, his bride and his son (Sahel) rushed to grace him, but Homayoon Jan’s body was already bleeding and I couldn’t bear it and lost consciousness. He was then taken to the hospital but since it was Eid day, most of the doctors were not available in the hospital. My son died the following day despite we found some blood for him. When I came back to conscious, I saw a box in our yard a lot of people telling me to wake up and see Homayoon’s face, I still remember him as he was like a sleeping white face with closed beautiful eyes. From that day, grief, pain and poverty knocked our door and after six months, while the bride was delivering her baby (Ajmal), she lost her life, too. They left me with three kids (two sons, Sahel and Ajaml with a daughter, Sapna), imagine what sort of difficulties I had to bear for growing them. Lack of food, lack of shelter, lack of clothes, lack of medical care and so on. There was no one to help us even one day. Many times in life, I wanted to commit suicide as in addition to this, my husband has also been too sick and I had to wash neighbors’ clothes and clean their homes to make some money for husband’s treatment and children’s food. My grandson has been washing cars and selling water and shopping bags and grand-daughter has been taking water up the hill for the neighbors to earn bread every day.
